To create and maintain a beautiful and healthy mouth and smile, for a lot of people just brushing twice a day is not enough. The main cause of tooth loss in adults is periodontal (gum) disease caused by bacterial plaque forming and building up on the tooth surfaces leading to inflammation of the gums. Some people are more susceptible than others but 1 in 5 have immune systems that react to the bad bacteria this contains in a sporadic, unpredictable way breaking down the bone and tissues surrounding the teeth. patient may become aware of this if their gums become swollen, bleed when brushing or flossing, if they suffer from bad breath or their teeth begin to loosen. The gums may also become painful.
Children also need to be shown how to clean their teeth effectively, especially if they are wearing or about to be fitted with braces to straighten the teeth. There is nothing more disappointing than seeing teeth that have been straightened by braces yet because of poor cleaning and diet whilst wearing the braces the teeth have become discoloured, mottled or decayed.
To help our dentists and patients achieve these goals we are fortunate to have the expert services of our excellent friendly oral hygienist, Karen; as well as cleaning teeth thoroughly she spends a lot of time discussing and showing patients the best way for them as individuals to look after their teeth on a daily basis.
Initial appointments are for half an hour and follow up as mutually agreed to help keep the mouth in top condition; all this is done in a professional yet friendly relaxed way on a one to one basis.
